Contemporary Russian Prose
contributed by Alex Vavilov,
VAGRIUS Publishers, Moscow, who writes, "Here is my PERSONAL top-list
of the best Russian authors (prose only).
1. Victor Pelevin.
Works: Chapayev and Emptyness, Generation P,
Oman Ra,
The Life of Insects, and some short stories. Check out
"Generation P"!
Pelevin's work is a nice mixture of fine modern language, philosophy,
new ideas. A good part of Buddhism, also. By the way, he is in a
Korean monastery right now (he is very strange person).
Also available in English:
The Blue Lantern and Other Stories
2. Viktor Sorokin.
I think that he will never be published in English-- too many Russian
colloquialisms, and a lot of bad words in text. His works include
The Norm and Last Love of Marina.
3. Dmitry Lipskerov.
Good writer. He is a dramaturgist too. Works include 40 Years
of XanGoe and Gotlib's Space.
4. Ludmila Petrushevskaya.
Good reading for women :-). Check out
The Time: Night.
5. Edward Radzinsky.
Maybe you know him. Good historic texts. He is a must--strongly
recommended. His works include
The Last Tsar : The Life and Death of Nicholas II,
Stalin, Questions of History, and Questions
of Love.
Notes from Amazon.com:
Radzinsky is, after Chekhov, the most frequently staged Russian
playwright, and his plays have won him international acclaim. A
trained historian, Radzinsky is the author of two international
bestsellers, The Last Tsar and Stalin. He lives in
Russia, where he is a popular television personality.
