Reading List, Summer 1999
President William Jefferson Clinton's 12-book reading list for his
10-day summer vacation, 1999, announced in the August 23 press conference
given by Joe Lockhart, the president's spokesman. (New York Times,
August 24, 1999.)
"A voracious and eclectic reader, Clinton has made the release of
his summer reading list something of an annual rite," the Times
remarked. "It provides a glimpse into what the first reader is thinking
about, and it is one of the few nuggets of news that reporters covering
him can count on, since most of his vacation activities are screened
from public view."
Gabriel Snyder of the New York Observer remarks:
"did they mention who helps him put together his summer reading?
It seems a flack must have been involved. Richard North Patterson
shows he's just a regular guy. Marguerite Yourcenar because, well,
he's a Rhodes Scholar. And then Waves of Rancor: Tuning in the
Radical Right which seems such an obvious political jab at the
G.O.P that it's painfully embarrassing." ("flack"= publicist. --Ed.)
